On this site you can find out about art work in batik, how it works and some of it's background. And see how a batik is done, step-by-step. Also there's some of Helen Dougall's work and information about a batik course she usually runs in Spring and Autumn in Suffolk, UK.
Batik is both an art and a craft, producing paintings on cloth and decorated fabrics for furnishing or clothes. Batik can be exciting, expressive, precise, spontaneous, subtle or bold.
Batik encompasses a whole range of techniques, all based on the fact that dye is resisted by areas or lines of wax painted or drawn onto fabric. When many stages are complete the wax is removed to reveal the design.
